Modern Cloth Nappy 101: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Perfect Fit

Cloth nappies have come a long way in recent years, with modern designs featuring adjustable snaps, multiple layers for absorbency, and stylish prints. Not only are they a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to disposable nappies, but they are also easy to use and care for. However, finding a great fit that prevent leaks can take a bit of practice, especially for new parents - But fear not, we've got you covered! In this guide, we'll take you step-by-step instructions on how to fit a modern cloth nappy (MCN), including how to prepare the nappy, adjust sizing, how to do a fit check and how to troubleshoot common concerns.

Prevent Leaks with a Great Nappy Fit
Unravelling the Layers:
Components of a MCN

Before we get into the fitting process, let's break down the components of modern cloth nappies. Most MCN's boast a waterproof outer shell crafted from PUL (Polyester Polyurethane Laminate). This fabric is a game-changer because of its breathable yet waterproof nature, ensuring that your little one stays dry without feeling stuffy. The inside lining is a 'stay-dry' layer, often made from materials like polyester suede, which wicks moisture away from the baby's skin, keeping them comfy and rash-free.

And lastly, the all-important inserts. They are the unsung heroes of the MCN world, having to soak up all the little surprises your little one has to offer! These inserts come in a variety of materials, each with its own unique set of properties—microfiber, hemp, cotton, bamboo, and even blends of these materials. At Bamboo Grove co, we love bamboo-cotton inserts and it is easy to understand why they are such a popular choice for MCN users. Why? Well, this blend harnesses the natural absorbency and softness of bamboo with the durability and ease-of-care of cotton, making them a powerhouse for moisture retention, while being super comfortable and gentle on sensitive baby bottoms.

Prepping:
Getting Your Cloth Nappies Ready for Action

Before diving into the diverse world of cloth nappy configurations, it's essential to get them primed for use. Fresh out of the package, wash your adorable new cloth nappies to unlock their full potential. While a swift cycle does wonders for the nappy cover, the inserts often demand a bit more patience with multiple, lengthier washes to truly optimize their absorbency.

Speaking of configurations, our convertible cloth nappies covers all your bases, as they can be used as a pocket or all-in-2 nappy. If you're grappling with a wriggler, then the pocket style might just be your saving grace. Pre-stuff the inserts into the pocket so when it's go-time, everything is perfectly in place. Plus, this setup ensures the stay-dry suede layer cozily hugs your baby's skin. But if you're after a more straightforward prep or keen on having the plush bamboo-cotton blend right against your baby's skin, then simply snap those inserts on top of the cover.

And, don't overlook compostable liners when aiming for fuss-free cleanups. Tuck them into the setup, and you are ready for action. Especially useful if you're using barrier creams for your baby's skincare, these eco-friendly liners ensure the creams don't mess with the insert’s moisture-wicking magic.

Sizing Made Simple with Snaps:
A Snap-Perfect Fit

Achieving that snug, leak-proof fit starts with mastering the sizing of your MCN. Our nappies proudly wears the 'One Size Fits Most' badge, accommodating weights from roughly 3.5 kgs to 15-17 kgs, depending on your little one's unique build and physique. And that is where the waist and rise snaps come in, allowing you to adjust the size as your baby grows.

Those organized 4x3 rows located front and center of your MCN? They’re not just for show; these rise snaps are your secret weapon in achieving a tailored and leak free fit around your little one’s legs. Adjust to one of three different rise settings, to make sure the nappy perches just under the belly button and fit snuggly in the skin creases in the underwear line. Tuck any spare excess fabric back upwards under the front PUL tummy panel.

Next is the double row of snaps on the waistband, designed for a tailored fit. Simply adjust the snaps to comfortably secure around your baby's waist, ensuring there's space for two fingers between the front of the nappy and the tummy. For those extra-tiny newborns, the waistband can even overlap and snap together for an extra snug fit from day one.

As easy as 1-2-3: Steps to Fit a Cloth Nappy

Positioning the Nappy:

Begin by placing the ready nappy and its inserts under your baby, ensuring that it is above baby's bum crack and aligns with your baby's waistline.

Pull the nappy's front section up and across the baby's stomach, tucking its edges into the undie line for a leak free fit.

Fastening the Nappy:

Start by securing the waist anchor snaps. Ensure the nappy fits comfortably around the baby's waist.

Pull the front wings outward and fasten them, adjusting as necessary to attain a snug fit. Remember the 2-finger rule for a comfort check.

Review the position of the rise snaps. If they need repositioning, re adjust accordingly. Tuck any excess fabric up under the waistband towards your baby's navel.

Check the Fit:

Slide a finger beneath the leg elastic to confirm that there are no spaces or gaps. The elastic should be sufficiently snug to prevent leaks. The leg elastics might cause slight red lines on the skin (similar to those caused by other clothing) but, should not be so tight that it is uncomfortable.

Next check the undie line, the leg elastics should nestle into the creases where underwear typically sits — snug but not too tight or constricting.

Check the waistband fit by sliding two fingers between the waistband at the front of the nappy and your baby's tummy to ensure a comfortable fit.
